5th Avenue Theater Announces New Associate Artistic Director

the 5th Avenue Theater announced that Jay woods will join its Artistic Direction team as Associate Artistic Director – Artist Engagement.

A multifaceted theater artist, Woods is known internationally for her work as a director, artistic facilitator, educator and performer who most recently served as Co-Artistic Director of Seattle’s Sound Theater Company, an organization that has become an incubator of artistic leadership for the Seattle theater ecosystem. Woods will begin as Associate Artistic Director – Artist Engagement in March 2022 following her artistic debut at The 5th as New Production Director of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

We congratulate Bill and everyone at The 5th for embracing his talents. unique and bold vision for an equitable, human-centered theater community. “In 2020, Woods’ leadership extended beyond the essential work done within arts organizations and looked outwardly : She is the founder of the Seattle Theater Leadership Collective (STLC), a group that unites artistic leadership across the Pacific Northwest region in search of a healthier artistic ecosystem. Her work with SLTC solidified her as a critical voice in growing and reshaping the Seattle theater community in organizations of all sizes. 5th Avenue TheaterAssociate Artistic Director – Artist Engagement, Woods will create meaningful artistic relationships with the musical theater artistic community through dialogue, programming and policy, and will work collaboratively with Orlando Morales, Associate Artistic Director – Community Engagement and Bill berry, Production Artistic Director, to develop a long-term vision, goals, strategies and policies for casting, hiring creative teams, commissioning new musicals, and planning the supporting season.Jay woods is a director, educator and performer transplanted to Seattle from New York. Newly appointed as Associate Artistic Director – Artist Engagement at The 5th Avenue Theater, Woods recently completed his artistic direction service for the Sound Theater Company. She has worked in the United States and abroad for Seattle Representative, Seattle Public Theater, Intiman Theater, Earthseed, ArtsWest, Village theater, ACT Theater, Scottish Youth Theater, Youth Arts Scotland, Seattle University, Duke, Carnegie Mellon and Yale, among others. In response to the 2020 pandemic and the racial uprising, Jay founded the Seattle Theater Leadership Collective which unites the region’s artistic leadership in search of a healthier artistic ecosystem. Some directorial credits include Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (The 5th Avenue Theater), the world premiere of Repairs by Darren Canady (Sound Theater), Citizen: An American Lyric (Sound Theater), the US premiere of B (Washington Ensemble Theater) and Skeleton Crew (ArtsWest). She holds an MA in Directing from Napier University in Edinburgh in Scotland, a BA in Theater from SUNY Brockport and studied Film in Thailand at Mahidol University. Currently in progress: writing of the stage and cinematographic adaptations of Natasha Marin’s Black Imagination.
