The start of construction on the 51st Avenue redevelopment project is expected to begin in mid-May, weather permitting. The improvements planned for 51 Avenue (between 50 Street and 51 Street) will replace aging infrastructure that has reached the end of its life cycle. The project will include:
- Excavation and replacement of groundwater, sanitary sewer and stormwater infrastructure
- Reconstruction of the 51 Avenue roadway followed by paving and line marking
- Replacement and improvement of concrete sidewalks
- Landscaping including new shrubs and trees
- Redevelopment and improvement of the design of the municipal parking lot on the south side of 51st Avenue
- Lighting improvements
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.
“The 51 Avenue redevelopment is a priority project that will improve the quality of life for the entire community for many years to come, as it will result in significant physical improvements that will help revitalize the downtown core. These improvements include helping to prevent future water main breaks and sanitary sewer issues for businesses along this street,” said Ponoka Mayor Kevin Ferguson. “The project is an essential capital project to promote economic development in our community and to attract new businesses, buyers and tourism to Ponoka,” he added.
51st Avenue parking lot
During the work, 51 Avenue will be closed to traffic and there will be no on-street parking. Public parking will be available in the municipal parking lot on the south side of 51 Avenue with access from the alley. Redevelopment and improvements to this parking lot will take place towards the end of the project. At that time, on-street parking will be available on 51st Avenue.
Pedestrian access to shops
The City and the contractor will work closely with the businesses on 51st Avenue to coordinate pedestrian access to these businesses throughout the project. During the replacement of the sidewalks, access to the front entrances of the stores will be temporarily interrupted, but alternative access options to these businesses will be facilitated at this time, allowing customers to have continued access to the businesses of the 51 Avenue throughout the construction period.
