The new Public Square at 550 Madison Avenue, a 37-story commercial skyscraper in Midtown East, is now open. Designed by Snøhetta and developed by Olayan Group and RXR Realty, the new Private Public Space (POPS) is surrounded by a 70-foot-tall steel-framed glass canopy and is part of a larger renovation of the Postmodern designed by landmark Philip Johnson, as well as a renovated lobby designed by Gensler. AECOM Tishman was the general contractor for the 21,000 square foot renovations to the property, located between East 55th and 56th Streets.
Recent photos show the completed look of the accessible space at ADA, which has been fully completed since our last update in July. The project team for the plaza also included Adamson Associates Architects as official architect, SiteWorks as landscape architect, Arup as lighting designer, Phyto studio providing dirt, Orange County Ironworks as fabricator of steel and Gabriel Steel Erectors erecting the steel. – framed awning,
The plaza features 48 trees, including Yellowwood, Sweetbay Magnolia, and River Birch; 200 shrubs such as Mountain Rosebay, Smooth Hydrangea and Bottlebrush Buckeye; 6,300 bulbs; and 10,000 herbaceous understory plants like Solomon’s seal, goat’s beard, black cohosh, coral bell, and sword fern.
Various flat and curved concrete and stone surfaces run the length of the plaza.
Snohetta’s Triple Glazed Glass Canopy is designed to collect 93,000 gallons of rainwater per year which can be used to water all the plants below.
This space includes several raised tables and seating around circular garden beds, gender-neutral public restrooms, and three food and beverage kiosks. Eat Offbeat offers food prepared by refugee and immigrant chefs, Local Roots NYC offers farm-to-table Chinese food and bubble tea, and Black Fox Coffee Co. is a local New York cafe.
Adjacent to the space is a new arched window designed to match the one along Madison Avenue and offers views of the newly remodeled lobby.
The renovations at 550 Madison were designed to achieve LEED Platinum and WELL Gold certifications. Access to the place is available daily from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
