Union Avenue Apartments, housing for people with disabilities, opens its doors

ORLAND PARK, IL – Officials at Orland Park have joined staff at Sertoma Center to open a new supportive housing unit in the southern suburbs.

Union Avenue Apartments are located at 14205 South Union Street and are open to residents with developmental or other disabilities. Officials from the Illinois Housing Development Authority and the Cook County Housing Authority were also present at the April 19 dedication.

“Sertoma is committed to the personal success of residents. Being able to offer on-site support services in an environment conducive to independent living is beneficial,” said Gus van den Brink, Managing Director of Sertoma Centre. “Orland Park’s location is ideal due to its proximity to shopping, pharmacy, restaurants, parks, recreation facilities, public transportation and the library.”

According to Sertoma, housing websites received more than 500 requests for the 16 available Union Avenue Apartment units in September. Of these, all tenants had to be disabled and qualify for a housing choice voucher program.

All of the residents who will be living in the 13 one-bedroom apartments and three two-bedroom apartments have proven that they cannot live independently without support services.

Sertoma at Orland Park will operate similarly to the Sertoma Center at Homewood, which opened in 2016. In both buildings, residents can attend counseling, job training and help with shopping and payment bills.

Each apartment has a private kitchen, bathroom and living area. Community terraces and laundry rooms are located in the building. Many units are fully accessible.
